The clock tower was created in 1623 by adding to the highest tower of the ancient walls on the south-east corner of the old town. The bell and clock were installed to give the time to the whole community and also to sound an alarm when necessary. The bell was cast in Lorgues itself, the inscription stating its manufacture in the reign of Louis XII “the Just”, and declaring “I was made a voice for Lorgues” (Je suis été faicte une voix à Lorgues). The campanile is a symbol of a free and proud town.

The bell was classified as a Historic Monument in 1979 and the clock in 1981. Bell and clock together still give the time for the town. To reach the platform of the bell at 23m height, one has to climb 106 steps!
